Castel of Buttrio stands on a rise east of Udine. The plain runs out in front of the house, and the Julian Alps close the horizon. Vineyards occupy the slope. A round tower and a stone wall mark the estate from the road.

The house belongs to the Colli Orientali, the white-wine country of this border: Friulano, Ribolla Gialla and the quieter bottles of the hills. It also sits inside a wider private wine journey in Italy, when Friuli is one chapter rather than the whole trip.
The hills

A wine day here can stay on the estate. The vines, the house and a table are within a short walk of one another, so the afternoon does not have to become a circuit of cellars.
Venice, Trieste and the Collio are different geographies. Buttrio holds more convincingly for several nights than as a pause between airports.
