The approach
The road runs between the cypresses.
Bolgheri is reached along the avenue of cypresses, then through the village and out onto the plain. The sea is close. The hills stay behind the vines.
Ornellaia belongs to that plain: a coastal estate, a short drive from the village, and a different day from a hill-town cellar. The afternoon can stay with the estate, a table in Bolgheri, and the drive back to the coast.
The wines

Bolgheri took its name from the village and its reputation from the plain. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot are the varieties the coast became known for, grown within sight of the Tyrrhenian.
What the estate can offer — a walk in the vineyard, time in the cellar, a tasting — is asked for, and depends on the date. Lunch, the hour between appointments, and the car are planned around that answer.
