A ridge between hills and sea.
Le Marche sits between the Apennines and a short Adriatic shore. Inland, hill towns keep their own measure — Urbino as a Renaissance centre, Recanati as a literary house, Ascoli Piceno as civic travertine. Toward the water, Monte Conero is the rocky interruption of that coast: Sirolo and Numana belong to the regional park instituted in 1987.
We design a private journey from that relationship, not from a catalogue. The country is larger than any week. Arrival is usually through Ancona Raffaello Sanzio. What follows depends on dates, pace and which part of the ridge the traveller wants to inhabit.
The country
Inland stone, then the horizon.
The first film is the interior of Le Marche: a stone hamlet under the hills, then a town terrace looking toward the Adriatic. It is not a named itinerary. It is the ground from which a route is chosen.
Urbino
A palace in the shape of a city.
The historic centre of Urbino is a UNESCO World Heritage property, inscribed in 1998. Federico da Montefeltro rebuilt the hill town within walls that still hold the centre. Visitors walk that civic fabric, then enter Palazzo Ducale — seat of the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche.
Casa Raffaello, kept by the Accademia Raffaello on Via Raffaello, presents the house where tradition places Raphael’s birth in 1483, and the workshop of his father Giovanni Santi. Hours and rooms belong to the museum. We do not invent private apartments or after-hours access.
The rooms
Measure, then the collection.
The courtyard is the palace thinking in proportion before any painting is named. The Galleria occupies those rooms as a state museum. Ticketed hours change; we confirm them when a journey is written, rather than promising a circuit that the week cannot hold.
Urbino can open a Marche journey or sit as a single inland night beside the Conero. The choice is distance and appetite, not a rule.
The Conero coast
A headland on a low shore.
Monte Conero is the only rocky bastion on this stretch of Adriatic between the northern lagoons and Gargano. The Parco Regionale del Conero has its seat in Sirolo. Numana sits on the same promontory. Trails, bathing and mooring are regulated; some paths to the sea close. We do not guarantee a cove, a boat or a quiet beach.
Inland Le Marche
Three places that hold the interior.
The coast does not explain the region. Recanati, the Frasassi gorge and Ascoli Piceno give the inland a different grain — a house-museum, limestone, a civic square. They are not a circuit. We choose among them.
Frasassi
A gorge, then a guided cave.
The Grotte di Frasassi open at Genga, in the Apennine interior. The tourist path is a guided walk of about an hour and a quarter, 1,500 metres, at 14°C. Groups are accompanied by the operator’s guides. Tickets are timed. This is a public show cave, not a private descent.
The film shows the gorge wall, not the chambers inside. Access to the cave is arranged when it belongs in the week — subject to the day’s timetable, not to a promise made on this page.
Recanati
A house that is still a house.
Giacomo Leopardi was born in Recanati on 29 June 1798. Palazzo Leopardi, on Via Leopardi, is a private house-museum still inhabited by descendants. Casa Leopardi publishes guided routes through the library — more than 20,000 volumes — and, on some tickets, the apartments.
Italia.it names Colle dell’Infinito and the remains of the Torre di Sant’Agostino among the town’s Leopardi places. They are civic ground, not extras we can reserve. Recanati is inland, on the hill. The Adriatic film above is a different shore.
Ascoli Piceno
A city that names its stone.
The Comune has long presented Ascoli as the city of travertine: civic squares, towers, and a historic centre walked on pale stone. Piazza del Popolo is the civic room most travellers meet first. Further south than Urbino, it gives a Marche journey a second urban grain — Piceno rather than Montefeltro.
Loreto, on the way between the Conero and Recanati, holds the Santuario della Santa Casa. It can sit in a journey as a basilica visit, not as a programme we invent around it. In autumn, inland Pesaro-Urbino also holds the Acqualagna white truffle fair — a season we have already written, not a festival we organise.
Food and wine
Names the land already uses.
Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi and Verdicchio di Matelica are the inland whites, each with a riserva at DOCG. On the headland, Rosso Conero DOC and Conero DOCG take Montepulciano as a grape. Further south, Rosso Piceno DOC belongs to the Piceno hills.
At the table: Oliva Ascolana del Piceno DOP — including the stuffed, breaded olive — and Ciauscolo IGP, the spreadable salume of selected Marche comuni. Vincisgrassi and brodetto are cooked here without a protected badge; we treat them as kitchen tradition, not as certificates.
Producer visits, tastings and private meals can be proposed when the week wants them. We do not publish a list of houses. Arrangements are made for the traveller, not advertised as already held. In late October the Acqualagna white truffle fair can sit inside the same week, if the dates agree.

These are directions, not packages. Duration, order and overnight bases follow the people travelling.
Art and historic towns
Urbino for the palace and the UNESCO centre; Recanati for Casa Leopardi; Ascoli Piceno for the travertine square. Loreto if a sanctuary belongs in the same movement. We select. We do not complete a list.
Coast and countryside
Sirolo and Numana on the Conero, then inland hills or the Frasassi gorge when the week wants limestone instead of water. Weather, park ordinances and the season decide more than a brochure.
Food, wine and local traditions
Verdicchio country, Rosso Conero on the headland, Piceno reds, olives and ciauscolo — and, in late October, Acqualagna if the fair coincides. Tastings and tables are arranged when they fit, not sold as a set menu.

We begin with dates, who is travelling, and which part of Le Marche already has a claim on you — Urbino, the coast, the table, or none of those yet. Then we propose a base, or two, and the movement between them.
Accommodation, drivers and visits are assembled around that brief. Museum hours, cave tickets and any tasting are confirmed when we know the week, not claimed in advance on this page. What does not belong is left out. The region is the field. The journey is the selection.
